Art Every Day Month: November 16

Showoff Revisited, originally uploaded by Leah Virsik.

Sewn to the watercolor paper above are scraps of my quilt pieces that were lying on my floor. I love those end scraps. Very patchwork like. They remind me of prayer flags. I’ve been wanting to make some prayer flags and it’s so so nice when things just happen without any planning. What started out as a postcard mail art experiment has turned in a fun little series and I’m feeling a bit attached. I don’t want to mail them. I’m curious to discover what’s underneath them… what am I meant to learn from them? It will be revealed.

As much as the mess on my floor bothers me, I love picking up a paper or fabric scrap off the floor and helping it find a new home.

I spent a fair amount of time looking for a WordPress Portfolio theme for my website this evening. There are definitely some nice ones out there but not exactly what I want. I can super focused and not want to do anything else. The transition from one thing to another can be difficult and yes, I know I need to clean the dishes at some point. :)

Thanks so much for reading!

Yay Sharon, go for it, it’s so much fun and from the looks of your site, I’m sure you have lots of fabric scraps around.

I’m hungry to learn and it’s through my process of creating that I’m ultimately satisfied. I’m curious about different materials and take on the challenge to incorporate what I’m most drawn to into my work. I’m intrigued to discover the resulting patterns and repetition. As I create, I explore my inner landscape. I’m attempting to uncover a stifled sound. It’s my challenge to express this internal voice through my art and ultimately, boldly, out loud.

My quest to connect my voice with my work has led me to reexamine my personal history. The threads in my bookbinding and in my collage are entwined in my familial roots. Growing up, I remember a quilt frame my dad made, taking up our entire living room. His grandmother taught him to quilt using scraps of clothing. Years later, I began a quilt when a friend was teaching a class on patchwork. To my surprise, cutting up fabric and piecing it back together reminded me of my work with paper collage.

As a child I would sew with my mom and what I most remember is the guilt I’d feel as I jammed up her machine. Now, when the threads and material bunch up they become useful fodder for my work. In some ways the threads act as a binding element, as in my books, and in other ways they are a reflection of my internal processes.
