WDS 2013

World Domination Summit gave me many unexpected gifts July 5โ€“7. It was amazing, in many ways. Our fearless leader Chris Guillebeau knows how to throw a party and create an intimate feeling with 3,000 of his closest friends with a finale toast. Thank you Chris!

One of my highlights was Saturday night when I sat down next to Jackie Shelley at Starbucks and we made collages together. I felt like a kid excited and absorbed. Byron Go was sitting with Jackie and asked me if I wanted a hug. I was tired and honestly didn’t want to get up out of my chair, and I told him so. He said that would be okay but he didn’t want me to miss out on the experience. All of this delivered in a safe way sans agenda. To my surprise, he gave me an incredible hug and lifted me off my feet. Kinda like this guy who hugs for the homeless. It made me want to pass along that experience to others.

I never thought that the way I give a hug might be a clue to how I relate in the world. And then I wondered why I don’t give amazing hugs. It occurred to me that I’m afraid of rejection, of offending someone, of being too intimate, of giving the wrong impression. I’ve got some work to do. ๐Ÿ™‚ It was a welcome insight.

Speaker Jia Jiang’s story about embracing rejection was a highlight.

  1. Who said you don’t give amazing hugs? You’re a great hugger!!

“Speaker Jia Jiangโ€™s story about embracing rejection was a highlight.”

Did you use that word intentionally?

    embrace :
    1. to take or clasp in the arms; press to the bosom; HUG.
    2. to take or receive gladly or eagerly; accept willingly: to embrace an idea.
    3. to avail oneself of: to embrace an opportunity.
    4. to adopt (a profession, a religion, etc.): to embrace Buddhism.
    5. to take in with the eye or the mind.

The cool thing about a hug is that in one action, you can give AND receive. ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Hi Leah,

I received your email on your new blog post. The mention of Jia Jiang’s story really caught my eye and I really enjoyed it. It’s definitely going to give me a thicker skin!

I wasn’t familiar with WDS so I went on the website. It sounded similiar to a book I have been reading… Yep, sitting right here on my printer is the book, “The Art of Non-Conformity” by Chris Guillebeau.

I’m not kidding! Now that is a cool coincidence.

    Thanks for posting this!
